Calculate TDS on Your PF Withdrawal

How TDS on PF Withdrawal Works

Section 192A of the Income Tax Act governs TDS on PF withdrawals. The single biggest factor is whether you've hit 5 years of continuous service - cross that threshold and the entire withdrawal is exempt, no matter the amount.

Fall short of 5 years? Then three things determine what gets deducted: how much you're withdrawing, whether your PAN is linked, and whether you've submitted Form 15G or 15H. Below ₹50,000, there's no TDS regardless. Above that, it's either 10% (PAN linked) or 30% (PAN not linked).

Not Sure If You Can Withdraw Yet?

TDS is only relevant once you've confirmed you're eligible to withdraw in the first place. If you haven't checked that yet, use the PF Withdrawal Eligibility & Form Finder - it'll tell you whether your situation qualifies and which form to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is PF withdrawal after 5 years fully tax-free?

A. Yes, completely. Five or more years of continuous service means no TDS, regardless of how much you're withdrawing. That 5-year mark is the most important number in PF tax planning.

Q. What is Form 15G and when should I submit it?

A. Form 15G is a self-declaration that your total annual income is below the taxable threshold. Submit it to EPFO before you initiate the withdrawal. If they accept it and your income genuinely is below the limit, no TDS gets deducted - even if you have under 5 years of service. Don't submit it if your income exceeds the limit; that's a false declaration.

Q. What if TDS was deducted but my income is below taxable limit?

A. File your ITR and claim it back as a refund. The TDS that EPFO deducted shows up as advance tax paid on your behalf - you get it credited once income tax processes your return. It takes a few months but you do get it back.

Q. Does transferring PF to a new employer avoid TDS?

A. Yes - a transfer isn't treated as withdrawal at all, so there's no TDS trigger. Better still, your service period carries over and keeps building toward the 5-year exemption. If you're anywhere close to 5 years, transferring instead of withdrawing is almost always the right call.

Q. Is the employer's contribution also taxed on PF withdrawal?

A. When TDS applies, it's calculated on the entire withdrawal - your contribution, the employer's share, and all the interest accumulated. There's no partial exemption for the employee portion.

Q. What happens if I don't link PAN with UAN?

A. The TDS rate jumps from 10% to 30%. That's a significant difference on a large balance. Linking PAN takes a few days on the UAN portal and is worth doing before you file the withdrawal claim.
