UPI Failed Transaction Refund Timeline Calculator
Find out when your UPI, IMPS, or NEFT refund will be credited and what to do if it is delayed.
Check Refund Timeline
UPI refund timelines are governed by official NPCI rules. In most cases, refunds are automatic and do not require any complaint.
How UPI Refunds Actually Work
UPI is an instant payment system, but refunds are not instant. Refunds pass through multiple banking layers including your issuing bank, the UPI switch, and the beneficiary bank. Most delays happen due to reconciliation cycles, not manual intervention.
Official UPI Refund Timelines Explained
- UPI Failed Transaction: 1 to 3 working days
- UPI Pending Transaction: Auto reversal within 3 to 5 working days
- IMPS Failed Transaction: 1 working day
- NEFT Failed Transaction: Same day or next working day
In exceptional reconciliation cases, banks are allowed up to 7 working days.
Failed vs Pending vs Debited Transactions
Failed
The transaction was rejected and the amount was not credited to the receiver. Refunds are almost always automatic.
Pending
The transaction is still processing. Do not raise a complaint immediately if it is within the official timeline.
Debited but Not Credited
This is the most confusing state. In most cases, it resolves automatically within the defined refund window.
When You Should Not Raise a Complaint
- Transaction is still within NPCI timeline
- Status is pending and less than 48 hours old
- Bank settlement cycle is not completed
UPI Complaint Escalation Process
- Contact your payment app or bank support
Reach out through the official app or bank support channel using your transaction ID and bank reference number.
- Raise a formal complaint with the app or bank
If the refund is not credited after the official timeline, submit a formal complaint within the app or bank portal.
- Request escalation to NPCI through your bank
Ask your bank to escalate the issue to NPCI if the complaint remains unresolved.
- File a complaint via RBI Complaint Management System
As a final step, lodge a complaint on the RBI CMS portal if all previous steps fail.
What If Refund Is Not Received After 7 Days
If your refund is delayed beyond the allowed timeline, keep your transaction ID, bank reference number, and screenshots ready before escalating.
