How to File a Consumer Complaint Against a Bank
Banks are service providers under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. That means if your bank charges you without authorisation, reverses a fraud complaint without actually investigating it, harasses you on a loan, or simply refuses to service your account - you have the right to escalate formally and claim compensation.
Common Reasons People File Against Banks
- Deductions or charges that weren't disclosed or authorised
- Fraudulent transactions that the bank refused to reverse
- Loan recovery agents using harassment or threats
- Unreasonable delays in loan processing or account closure
- Credit card charges that don't add up
- Refusal to process a service without a legitimate basis
- Mis-selling - being pushed into deposits or investments under false pretenses
How to Escalate a Bank Complaint
- Bank's internal grievance cell - file a formal written complaint, get a reference number. Wait up to 30 days.
- RBI Integrated Ombudsman - if the bank hasn't resolved things, go to cms.rbi.org.in. This covers banks, NBFCs, and payment operators. Once they have all required information, expect a response within 30 days.
- Consumer commission - if the Ombudsman route doesn't work, or if you want compensation beyond what the Ombudsman can award (capped at ₹20 lakh), file here.
Worth noting: you don't have to go through the Ombudsman before approaching consumer court. The two are parallel remedies. But exhausting the bank + Ombudsman route first gives you a stronger paper trail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Should I go to RBI Ombudsman or consumer court for bank complaints?
A. Both are valid routes. RBI Ombudsman is faster, free, and better for straightforward disputes - but it's capped at ₹20 lakh in compensation. Consumer court has no such cap and covers a wider range of remedies. If your loss is significant or you want compensation for harassment, consumer court is the stronger option.
Q. Can I file against an NBFC in consumer court?
A. Yes. NBFCs that provide financial services to retail customers are covered under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 just like banks.
Q. What if the bank closes my complaint without proper resolution?
A. Document it. A complaint closure without resolution is itself evidence of deficiency in service. Mention it explicitly in your RBI Ombudsman complaint or your consumer court filing - it strengthens your case.
